The capsule has two concentric cylindrical chambers one inside the other, which in a resting state are completely isolated. When pressure is applied to the centre of the capsule, the bottom snaps off and allows the liquid, housed in the outer chamber, to flow into the other chamber where the compressed pad is located. At this point, the pad, rehydrating on contact with the liquid, grows until it is completely absorbed. The resulting increase in volume causes the pad to escape from the capsule.
